In 1900 three lighthouse keepers, James (Gerard Butler), Thomas (Peter Mullan) and Donald (Connor Swindells) settle on Flannan, a small islet 32 kilometers from the Outer Hebrides on the Scottish coast, replacing the previous lighthouse keepers. After a storm, their routine stay is altered with the appearance of a castaway in a rowboat. James and Thomas help Donald get to the location of the body to confirm that he has died. The man, however, wakes up and attacks Donald who, when trying to defend himself, ends the castaway's life. It doesn't take long for the three lighthouse keepers to understand this strange behavior: the man was trying to defend a chest with gold ingots. Without time to recover from the surprise and decide what to do with the body and the gold, two other men arrive on the island who, without a doubt, are also after the gold.
