At 8:02 in the morning, NYPD Detective Jack Mosley receives a seemingly simple assignment. Criminal Eddie Bunker is scheduled to testify before a grand jury at 10 o'clock and must be transported from his cell to the courthouse, 16 blocks away. When Jack, who has serious problems with alcohol, puts Eddie in the back seat of his car and prepares to cross New York during the morning rush hour, he does not notice that a van is following him. Jack decides to stop at a liquor store to buy breakfast. Suddenly Eddie, who is waiting inside the car, finds himself with a gun pointed at his head. Fortunately, Detective Jack appears just in time to prevent the tragedy and kills one of the two assailants, letting the other escape. When Jack calls for backup, the first to show up on the scene are homicide detective Frank Nugent and his team. Eddie instantly turns pale: one of the detectives on Nugent's team is the man he must testify against.
