Tired of running away from himself, Harvey Milk (Sean Penn) leaves an executive position on Wall Street to come out of the closet and move to the Castro neighborhood of San Francisco with his partner Scott Smith (James Franco). He opens a camera store that soon becomes the meeting point of the neighborhood, whose neighbors have no other place to meet in a particularly rigid time. Harvey realizes that they are not few and begins to speak for them. He faces employers, unions and political intolerance. Their victories are increasing. His bravery receives constant threats and inspires others to follow in his footsteps. In his private life, he begins a destructive adventure with Jack Lira (Diego Luna), a young man who clings to him to survive. The homosexual community, which feels united and stronger, elects him to public office and he becomes the first openly gay politician elected in the country. His message of freedom and hope creates many enemies, and he must face Dan White (Josh Brolin), another newly elected councilman in the city council. Harvey Milk was murdered in 1978. But even after his death, Harvey's voice speaks of the bravery of a generation that ushered in a new era of tolerance and understanding.
