Abel Gray, a small-town police officer, investigates the drowning death of August Pierce, a boy from an exclusive private school. For fear of scandal, the educational center insists that it is a suicide. However, Abel discovers from Carlin, the only friend the boy had at school, that August was a victim of bullying, and that the bully was Harry, another student with whom Carlin had once dated. Abel suspects that the deceased young man's initiation into school had unexpectedly horrible results and requests the help of the photography teacher, Betsy, who believes that the boy's spirit is leaving clues. As Abel deepens his investigation he discovers a world of corruption and cover-ups, and must confront the truth about himself. He is a man manipulated by the ghosts of the past.
