After losing his horse in a bet, rancher Pat Brennan (Randolph Scott) joins Willard Mims and his new wife, Doretta (Maureen O'Sullivan) for a stagecoach trip. But things get ugly when they are surprised by three bandits whose leader, Usher, does not hesitate to murder the driver. To save his skin, Willard confesses to Usher that Doretta is the daughter of a rich copper mine owner from whom he could get a large ransom. Despite that, Usher kills Willard before going after the money. Brennan manages to get rid of the two remaining thugs, but is forced to duel Usher to protect Doretta.
