Director CHARLES BURNETT (Never Go to Bed Angry, Killer of Sheep, My Brother's Wedding Sl am), veteran trumpet player devoted to WC HANDY, presents a story where a young man reunites with his family in Mississippi in the mid-1950s and experiences the intergenerational tensions between the heavenly sounds of gospel and the diabolical wails of the blues. Musical clips included include performances by BESSIE SMITH, DINAH WASHINGTON, MUDDY WATERS, IDA COX, WILLIE DIXON, LIGHTNIN' HOPKINS, VICTORIA SPIVEY and SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON.







For BURNETT The sound of the blues was a part of my environment that I did not highlight above the others. However, as the years went by, the blues slowly emerged as an essential source of images, humor, irony and understanding that allows us to reflect on the human condition. I always wanted to make a film about the blues that was not only a reflection of its nature and its content, but also that referred to the form itself. In short, a story that offers a global idea of the blues.
