Ugo, an electronic engineer who works in Ravenna, and Corrado, a mining engineer, have not seen each other since they left the University. Corrado arrives in Ravenna to recruit workers for Patagonia, where his company is setting up a refinery; and he turns to his friend Ugo to help him find specialized personnel. Thus he meets Ugo's wife, Giuliana, who, as a result of a car accident, has suffered a shock from which she has not yet fully recovered. Giuliana does everything she can to overcome the anguish and nightly nightmares that oppress her, but the stressful environment of factories and mechanized jobs in which she lives is the least suitable to help her heal.
Michelangelo Antonioni's first color film and the crowning work of his career, "The Red Desert" is the perfect epilogue to the anthological tetralogy of incommunication, formed together with "The Adventure", "The Night" and "The Eclipse". Monica Vitti once again emerged as the perfect muse of the legendary Italian director, this time generating great chemistry with the double Oscar nominee Richard Harris ("Unforgiven", "A Man Called Horse").
