Chelsea (Sasha Grey) is a luxury Manhattan prostitute who offers more than just a sexual encounter: upon payment, she will simulate a romantic relationship, complete with the experience of having a girlfriend. Despite a large portfolio of satisfied customers, Chelsea wants to expand her business. Her real boyfriend Chris, a personal trainer at a downtown gym, has come to accept his girlfriend's lifestyle, not to mention the luxurious apartment they share as a result of her success. But we are in October 2008 and the fragility of the American economy is on everyone's lips. One of Chelsea's clients, a Jewish jeweler, advises her to invest her savings in diamonds. Diamonds have no value. Buy gold. At the same time, he asks businessmen (some of them his clients) for advice on how to make profits in a down market. Chelsea goes so far as to visit a sex expert who has an influential website and who promises her a favorable review in exchange for trying his services for free.
