Harvey (Dustin Hoffman) is a music composer for advertising who, in addition to being fired, is ignored by his daughter at her wedding. He decides to drown his sorrows in the airport bar where he will strike up a conversation with Kate (Emma Thompson), a spinster whose social life is limited to humiliating blind dates and endless telephone conversations with her mother. Harvey is inspired by her intelligence and way of being and soon there will be a connection that will make their sad lives change forever.
