Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930), in addition to writing the adventures of the detective Sherlock Holmes, created another fictional hero, Professor George Edward Challenger, whose best known adventure is The Lost World, published in 1912. Conan Doyle combined the latest scientific discoveries with fantastic elements. The popularity of this novel motivated an early film adaptation signed by Harry O. Hoyt, in the part corresponding to the actors, and Willis O'Brien, responsible for the technical direction, scientific research, creation of dinosaurs and their animation. The film also marked a personal triumph for O'Brien, who validated his talent with "Creation" (1931) and "King Kong" (1933), a major box office success that was supported by early samples of merchandising. More than 70 years after its creation, Stan Winston, responsible for the special effects of "Jurassic Park", pointed to The Lost World as one of his main sources of inspiration.
