El compositor italiano Giovanni Zamboni es algo de un misterio para el oyente moderno. Se sabe muy poco de su vida; nació en Roma a finales del siglo XVII, se convirtió en un virtuoso del teorbo, laúd, clave, guitarra, mandora y mandolina, y tuvo una carrera paralela como joyero. Se han perdido varias de sus composiciones a lo largo de los años, pero entre sus obras publicadas se encuentra una colección de madrigales de cuatro partes y una colección de música para laúd solista, las Sonate dintavolatura di leuto. Publicado en Lucca en 1718, el Sonate dintavolatura di leuto es una de las últimas fuentes de música para laúd solista, escrita en tablaturas italianas. Las obras contenidas dentro muestran la confusión entre las dos estilos aceptados de sonata; aquellos para la iglesia (da chiesa) y aquellos para uso doméstico (da camera). Muchas de las sonatas de laúd de Zamboni están escritas en conjuntos de cuatro partes, conteniendo principalmente movimientos de baile.
