Aunque al final del siglo XIX Nápoles era más famoso por sus canciones que por su música instrumental, en realidad fue un período altamente innovador para el mandolín. De hecho, las dos formas se desarrollaron estrechamente entre sí, con algunas características cruzando tanto la música vocal como instrumental; las líneas melódicas únicamente napolitanas se transmiten fuertemente tanto en la voz como en el mandolín, y los acompañamientos también contienen similitudes, con el piano en este disco que claramente invoca la flauta que normalmente acompañaría a un cantante. Esta versión reúne a 12 compositores diferentes para ofrecer una fascinante selección de la música de esta época, ninguna de las cuales se había grabado antes. Casi todos los compositores destacados estudiaron o enseñaron en el renombrado conservatorio de Nápoles, San Pietro a Majella, donde el mandolín fue tratado seriamente como un instrumento clásico por primera vez. Estas piezas son un acompañante adecuado para la larga tradición de la canción napolitana, y cualquier amante de la música romántica se encontrará inmediatamente transportado a una de las ciudades más seductoras y evocadoras de Italia.
