Bedich Smetana fue un precursor del movimiento nacionalista de la música en la Checoslovaquia del siglo XIX y desempeñó un gran papel en el desarrollo de la identidad musical del país. Esta grabación comprende la obra más famosa de Smetana, la inigualable Má vlast (Mi patria), una serie de seis poemas sinfónicos compuestos durante cinco años que representan diferentes elementos del paisaje de la patria del compositor. Vyehrad, o El Castillo Alto, es el primer movimiento, basado en el castillo de Praga, residencia de los primeros reyes checos. Se abre con arpegios tocados por un dúo de arpas, y más tarde se representa un elemento militar con la ayuda de un tema de marcha. El segundo movimiento, Vltava (El Moldava), representa el recorrido del río desde las montañas hasta su desembocadura. árka, el tercer movimiento, explora el folclore checo centrado en la doncella bohemia de Amazonas del mismo nombre. Esto es seguido por Z eských luh a háj (De los prados y los campos de Bohemia); una representación de un hermoso paisaje en un día soleado. Estos primeros cuatro movimientos estaban destinados a completar la obra, pero después de una pausa de cuatro años, Smetana compuso otros dos: Tábor, que retrata a los guerreros husitas que fundaron y defendieron la ciudad de Tábor en 1420, y Blaník, nombrado después de la montaña en el centro de Bohemia. Este, el último movimiento, comienza con los mismos ritmos impetuosos que Tábor y más tarde se relaja en un himno alegre.
