Una importante obra en el desarrollo de la ópera rusa escrita en la década de 1860 en un verdadero estilo dramático romántico que anticipaba las óperas de Mussorgsky y Tchaikovsky. Todo el elenco ruso respaldado por la gran orquesta del Teatro Bolshoi. Alexander Serov (1821-71) es un nombre desconocido para todos excepto para los más dedicados a la música clásica rusa. Aparte de la poderosa mano - Balakirev, Borodin, Cui, Mussorgsky y Rimsky-Korsakov de San Petersburgo, y Tchaikovsky en Moscú, varios compositores pueden reclamar la herencia de la tradición romántica rusa establecida por Glinka. Compositores como Dargomisky, Lvov y Serov en particular. Serov, al igual que Rimsky (marina), y Borodin (químico) no comenzaron como un compositor. Él era un funcionario civil, y estudió música a través de lecciones que recibió de Josef Hunke por correo. Su ópera Judit fue un éxito instantáneo, contando con el joven Tchaikovsky entre sus fans. Su segunda ópera Rogneda le otorgó al compositor una pensión real.
