Her matchless beauty and spirited sense of drama - coupled with an exceptionally beautiful voice - took Anna Moffo (1932 - 2006) right to the top, bypassing the second-rank opera circuit, straight to the celebrity status of opera stars famed in Europe and the USA alike. She was enchanting to listen to and delightful to see in Mozart's operas and as Gilda in Rigoletto, Nanetta in Falstaff and Lucy in Lucia di Lammermoor, and she was irresistible as Violetta in La Traviata, the most successful of all her roles.
