En 1978, Alfred Schnittke (1934-98) escribió la música incidental para una producción de The Inspector's Tale, una adaptación para el escenario de Dead Souls de Gogol. Estaba destinado a ser dirigido por Yuri Lyubimov, pero el gobierno soviético prohibió la producción. Una suite fue ensamblada a partir de la partitura por Gennadi Rozhdestvensky, y dos colegas destacados de Schnittke, Gubaidulina y Denisov, contribuyeron con una marcha compuesta conjuntamente, que abre este CD. En 1985, la música fue coreografiada, el ballet, llamado Esquisses, se presentó en el Bolshoi. Schnittke compuso una serie de nuevas piezas para esta producción. Los personajes de la acción son todos de Gogol, pero además de los Dead Souls, conocemos a Tchitchikov, el Nariz del Mayor Kovalyov y a Ferdinand VIII de las Notas de un Loco. Un pasaje del libro se recita en su pieza y es leído por el director de este CD. La música es poli-estilística, con una enorme orquesta (2 guitarras eléctricas, flexatone, piano preparado con monedas insertadas entre las cuerdas), citas de Beethoven, Haydn, Tchaikovsky, todo con un sentido de travesura diabólica que se adapta idealmente a la naturaleza grotesca de muchos de los personajes de Gogol.
