Aram Khachaturian, compositor armenio del siglo XX, mantuvo contentas a las autoridades soviéticas: su música es accesible, melodiosa, dramática, folclórica y glorifica la victoria sobre las fuerzas del mal. Las suites de ballet Espartaco y Gayane gozan de una gran popularidad, no en vano por la Danza del sable y el Adagio de Espartaco, que se han utilizado en muchos anuncios, películas y series de televisión. No hay mejor campeón para esta suntuosa música orquestal que el gran director Evgeny Svetlanov y sus fuerzas del Bolshoi, mostrando suficiente refinamiento y gusto para evitar el vacío bombástico. Junto con Shostakovich y Prokofiev, Khachaturian fue uno de los compositores más famosos y celebrados de la Unión Soviética. Nacido en Tiflis, Georgia, sus primeras influencias musicales fueron la música folclórica de Georgia y de su patria ancestral, Armenia. Su ballet Gayaneh, compuesto en 1942, aprovechó esta pasión por su herencia armenia; situado en una granja colectiva, su historia se ocupa del triunfo del amor y la lealtad a la patria sobre los temas de traición que mantendrían contento a Stalin. El ballet de Khachaturian Espartaco, escrito en 1956, tomó como base la famosa historia del esclavo griego convertido en gladiador y su derrota del general romano Craso. Compuesto en los últimos años del régimen de Stalin, Khachaturian y su público se sintieron atraídos por el tema de la resistencia contra la tiranía.
