Juan Bautista Comes (1582-1643) es uno de los compositores más significativos del principio del barroco español, uniendo elementos del estilo renacentista con las técnicas y gustos emergentes del barroco. Fue un famoso músico de su tiempo y ocupó el prestigioso puesto de maestro de capilla de la catedral de Valencia. Desde 1437 esta catedral guardaba el Santo Cáliz, la copa que Jesús usó en la Última Cena, por lo que Comes escribió extensamente para la Eucaristía, el Santísimo Sacramento. Además de los motetes sagrados, esta nueva grabación contiene una selección de villancicos, obras corales escritas en el vernáculo, basadas en la música popular, escritas con el objetivo de hacer la liturgia más comprensible para el pueblo. Estaban escritos en estilo policoral, otorgando un carácter teatral y monumental al texto y la música. Excelentes interpretaciones del ensamble vocal español Amystis Chamber Choir, que ya grabó con éxito para Brilliant Classics las obras corales completas de Cabanilles (BC94781). El folleto contiene notas de programa y los textos originales cantados.
