Johnny Hamilton, after having participated in the American Civil War, returns after 2 years to Danark, his hometown, to find that things have changed. His old girlfriend, the sheriff's daughter, has gotten married and wants nothing more to do with him. In the cemetery Johnny discovers the grave of his father Chester Hamilton, who has supposedly been murdered from behind by a Mexican bandit named Santana. Additionally, Johnny is mistreated by two ruffians, Guild and Ross. When he finally arrives at his father's house, he discovers to his surprise that his mother is now the wife of his hateful uncle Claudio, in whose hands the entire family assets are now located. Johnny vows to discover his father's true murderer and unleash his anger in his desire for merciless revenge.
