Two horsemen arrive in Dodge City chasing a man. It's Independence Day and people gather around the prize of the shooting contest, a unique rifle: the Winchester 73. Lin McAdam (James Stewart), one of the pursuers, wins the contest and gets the rifle, but His opponent Dutch Henry Brown steals it and runs away. The rifle passes into the hands of an arms dealer, then an Indian chief, and later an outlaw. Meanwhile the chase continues. During a bank robbery Dutch Henry and his gang encounter McAdam. Dutch Henry escapes to the mountains with Lin McAdam hot on his heels, there they finally come face to face and the gun returns to its rightful owner.
