The film is an adaptation of autobiographical sections from Rithy Panh's 2013 book 'The Elimination' (Anagrama), which tells the story of his family before and after the Khmer Rouge entered Phnom Penh. The communist regime of Pol Pot took the capital of Cambodia on April 17, 1975, when Panh was 11 years old.
