a oliver se le rompe el corazón cuando descubre que georgette, la mujer de la que está enamorado, está felizmente casada con un severo oficial perteneciente al cuerpo de la legión extranjera. oliver se siente tan triste y desamparado que, considerando que no hay suficientes motivos para seguir viviendo, acaba planteándose el suicidio. cuando se dispone a intentarlo, tras haberse decidido definitivamente, se topa con un oficial que le anima a alistarse en el ejército. oliver acaba convenciendo a su mejor amigo stan de que se aliste con él. una vez los dos personajes se encuentran inmersos en su instrucción empiezan a darse cuenta de que han cometido un gran error. a partir de entonces no dejarán de sucederse las situaciones divertidas y estrambóticas, haciendo estragos en las filas.
